US blocks military aid to Lanka
- Action called for on extra judicial killings
- Call to establish UN Human Rights monitoring mission
- Unimpeded access to Tamil areas urged
The United States last week decided that no assistance will be extended to Sri Lanka under the 'Foreign Military Financing Programme' unless the Secretary of State certifies that the Government of Sri Lanka has taken action to bring to justice those responsible for extra judicial killings and other human rights abuses, including the establishment of a human rights monitoring mission.
This decision follows the approval of Section 690 of the Appropriations Act of 2008, which dealt with Sri Lanka, by the US Senate last week.

ReplyDeleteஇது சும்மா தீர்மானமே ஒழிய இன்னும் சட்டமாக்கப்படவில்லை. இத் தீர்மானம் அமெரிக்க செனற் சபையில் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது. ஆனால் அமெரிக்க அதிபர் புஷ் கையொப்பமிட்டால்தான் இத் தீர்மானம் அமுலுக்கு வரும்.
புஷ் இத் தீர்மானத்தில் பெரும்பாலும் கையொப்பமிடமாட்டார் என்று கொழும்பில் இருந்து வெளிவரும் சண்டே ரைம்ஸ் செய்தி வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.
ராஜபக்ச அமெரிக்காவின் எண்ணத்திற்கு ஏற்றவாறு நடக்காதமையும் இத் தீர்மானத்திற்கு ஒரு காரணம். அத்துடன் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் அண்மைய நடவடிக்கைகளும் ஒரு காரணம்.
எது எப்படியோ, இத் தீர்மானம் அமுலுக்கு வந்தால் இலங்கை அரசுக்குச் சில பின்னடைவுகள் ஏற்படும். ஆனால் இப் பின்னடைவுகளை சீனா மூலம் இலங்கை சரி செய்துவிடும் என நான் நினைக்கிறேன்.
