Tamil children swept up as war creates a new monster
In Sri Lanka's bitter civil war, my enemy's enemy is my friend, Connie Levett writes in Batticaloa.
"YOU joined voluntarily, you were volunteers, so now go and tell them the same thing," the big man instructed two child soldiers on the day they were released to their mothers.
Ram and Murali (not their real names), both 15, said they were not abducted; they went willingly, and when they found they did not like military training and wanted to return to school, they were allowed to leave. They gave their testimony to the Herald inside the fortified regional headquarters of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (Tamil People's Liberation Tigers), in the eastern Sri Lankan town of Batticaloa.
