AIADMK seeks enhanced security for Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday permitted counsel for the AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, to move the court on Thursday with regard to a letter, which issued a “final warning to her not to interfere in the Tamil Eelam LTTE issue”.
Counsel for Ms.Jayalalithaa, A. Navaneethakrishnan and L.P. Shanmugasundaram, told Justice M. Jaichandren in his chamber this afternoon regarding the receipt of the letter by the former Chief Minister.
Mr. Justice Jaichandren permitted counsel to move the court in the matter on Thursday.
In the letter from “Ulagath Thamizh Ina Paadukaappu Kazhagam (Bangkok branch), headquarters at Canada-910002,” the organisation’s “Aasia Thitta Aluvalar, Ve. Thamizhmaenthan” asked the former Chief Minister to mind her business and not to indulge in a “false campaign” against the Tamil Eelam LTTE in Tamil Nadu.
The letter said she was being warned in her own interest.

New Delhi: AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa's convoy was stoned near Madurai on Thursday, a day after she received an assasination threat allegedly from a Canada-based pro-LTTE outfit.
While Jayalalithaa was not hurt, her car window was broken after stones were pelted as she was on her way from Madurai to Ramnad district.
Jayalalithaa has blamed the DMK for the attack and says her security cover is not enough.
The incident comes a day after she received a hand written letter that said if Jayalalithaa does not stop criticising the LTTE she will be assasinated like former Pakistan prime minister, Benazir Bhutto.
The letter was allegedly sent from Malaysia.

Chennai, Oct 31:AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa today slammed the police for claiming that her party workers had pelted stones at her convoy when she visited the memorial of freedom fighter, late Muthuramalinga Thevar at Pasumpon to pay homage on his birth and death anniversaries.
In a statement here today, the Opposition leader also termed as "unfortunate" and "condemnable", the remarks by DGP K P Jain to a section of the media that the police was providing whatever security they could to her.
"As a former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition, I deserve 'Z' plus security cover, which has to be provided by the police," she said.
Refuting police claims of her party workers involved in stone-pelting, she said her party workers never tread the path of violence.
She reiterated her charge that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's Madurai based son M K Azhagiri was instrumental in carrying out the attack. - Agencies

Indian gunners fired relentlessly at LTTE Aircraft
November 1, 2008 at 8:55 pm · ~ News
Indian gunners in their country’s embassy compound in Sri Lanka fired relentlessly at the aircraft that were turning back and were en route to Killinochchi after dropping bombs on the Kelanitissa power station last Tuesday, Colombo Weekend Newspaper Lakbima News reported on Sunday Nov, 2.
The Report further said:
The gunners fired repeatedly shaking some of the adjacent buildings such as Galle Face to its foundations.
A guest in one of the Galle Face hotel rooms crept under a bed and said he never heard such gunfire in his life, and that he felt he should “dive for cover.’’ He said the walls of the building shook, and he feared an imminent calamity.
[John Seneviratne, Minister of Power and Energy, addresses a news conference to explain the damage at Kelanitissa power station after an aerial bombing by Tamil Tiger rebels, in Colombo October 29, 2008. The Tamil Tigers’ air wing set a power station ablaze in the Sri Lankan capital and hit an army base on Tuesday in separate air raids, the military said.

In the backdrop of Tamilnadu calls to the Indian centre to interfere in the Sri Lankan conflict, some sources asked ‘who gave the order to shoot?” Given the unpredictability of the LTTE, others said that the Indian government had stationed gunners precisely fearing an attack on the embassy by the unpredictable Tamil Tigers.
It may be the Indian gunners were not specially deployed to shoot at the light aircraft but were gunners who were stationed at the embassy compound for providing regular embassy security.
The LTTE air attack last Tuesday night caused damage to two turbines at the Kelanitissa power station and the Sri Lanka Airforce had maintained that the light aircraft returned despite their shooting at it.
The Indian gunners did not reach their targets either. Earlier Tamilnadu politicians raised a ruckus in the Indian centre, over the fact that Indian radar personnel were manning radars during a previous attack by the LTTE using the same lightweight aircraft.
Meanwhile reliable sources also said that the Sri Lankan President was ushered into a special bunker when the LTTE raid occurred ‘purely as a precaution’’. Though there was no confirmation from presidential sources of such an occurrence, we reliably learn that the president was momentarily ushered into a special facility for ‘’added security.”

800 Tone Done
Say “NO” to Tamil Nadu parippu(dahl) support
Ban import of Tamil films produced, directed and acted by those who held a protest rally in support of LTTE

When Tsunami struck southern part of India, India firmly refused any kind of help from outside world claiming that they can manage to look after the aftermath of Tsunami. This shows what a proud nation India is. Their firm stand avoided many unwanted social problems that could have sprung created by the so called helpers in need. Sri Lanka faced a significant social problem by allowing every Tom, Dick and Harry thro NGOs to help Sri Lanka but only looked after themselves but not the Tsunami victims. Many NGO’s promised houses, schools and other institutions in the affected areas but at the end the promised houses and schools had been built only in the air. Some NGO’s suddenly vanished or had to leave at the request of the Government. Some NGOs and Evangelistic sales people who came during this period on the pretext of helping the need started propagating Evangelism thus creating tension and social problems specially in the villages. We made the mistake and India did not.
Now the Tamil Nadu has promised food for the Tamil IDPs in the North. We are again doing a similar mistake. One cannot fathom why the Government agreed to accept pittance from (either in kind or cash) Tamil Nadu for the Tamil IDPs in the North. Sri Lankan Government has been looking after over ten years the welfare of almost 25000 Muslim and Sinhala families internally displaced by LTTE’s ethnic cleansing. I have no doubt that despite all our economic problems; we on our own can stand and look after the increasing IDPs in the North without Parippu (dahl) support from Tamil Nadu. Pardon me, I thought we are a proud nation?
Tamil Nadu CM Karunannidhi who organized mass protest of resignation against the Centre Government subsequently changed to be a Good Samaritan to send food stocks to Tamils in the North and there should be some hidden agenda. (hope there will not be arms and explosives hidden under the food stuff). One day he will turn around and say that it was Tamil Nadu who fed the IDP Tamils in the North to get a mileage for his gradually dwindling political career. Our Government should have courteously or diplomatically refused any help from TN for that matter who have been and still harboring LTTE men and hailing LTTE leader as a hero as the only savior of Tamil people in Sri Lanka. Our Government should have told Karunananidhi since there are thousands of poor people are dying of starvation in Tamil Nadu and it would be meritorious to divert that food stuff to feed their own people. We do not need Tamil Nadu parippu (dhal) free. But, Tamil Nadu can do one small favour to Sri Lanka and that is liaise with the TN Police to arrest all LTTE supporters including others who promote separatism in India under Prevention of Terrorism Act; also help Police and the Indian Navy in stopping smuggling of arms and explosives from Tamil Nadu to LTTE camps in the North.
There is another issue developed in Tamil Nadu last week and that is a protest rally against the GoSL and asking the centre Government to get GoSL to stop the on going war so that LTTE will have some breathing space. This protest rally was organized by the people involved in the Film Industry in Tamil Nadu involving , film producers, directors , Actors Guild etc. They hailed Prabhakaran as a hero who has come to rescue the Tamils in Sri Lanka (another epic for a Tamil film). Some of the names that came up in the print media are Barathirajah, Seemen, superstar Rajankanthi etc. The Media Minister should take cognizance of this fact and as a mark of protest should ban import of all Tamil films produced, directed and acted by those who organized the protest rally against GoSL in support of LTTE.

Ali Baba of DMK & His 40 thieves trying to save their faces.... at last & at least Sri lankan Media pokes fun on the old senile politician, who lost his respects with his kalinger TV serial episode playing with eelam tamils' dignity.
Politics as farce
No, don't open the champagne. A glass or two of the good old arrack, preferably Walter Mendis's special brew would do.
At a time when nobodies are desperately trying to turn themselves into somebodies and ego inflation is the name of the game we prefer to retain our modesty and hold onto our trumpet.
History
Still for all that, we cannot let this occasion pass. For it represents something of the political culture of the day and it is best that we record our words even though it might only be a footnote when the history of this period and our relations with India come to be written.
Last Sunday under the headline The god that failed we said in this column: "If I was a betting man, which I am not, I will bet you all the money in Nivard Cabraal's Central Bank to a couple of Chennai masala dosai that come next week Karunanidhi would be still seated in the same chair (which, by the way, he acquired new when he assumed office two years ago) polishing his dark glasses. If you believe in politicians, particularly when they make promises that are as empty as their heads, then you need to be certified."
Threat
This had to do with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi's threat that the whole DMK caboodle and hangers-on from other parties will resign from the Manmohan Singh government if it did not twist Sri Lanka's arm sufficiently to call a halt to its military action and bring out a ceasefire.
Deadline
The Ali Baba of the DMK and his near forty political 'thieves' gave a two week deadline to the Indian government to use strong arm tactics and win these demands or they would quit en masse. The deadline ended on Thursday but Karunanidhi is still there with a resignation hardly on his mind.
One did not have to be a clairvoyant or a Malayalam horoscope reader to say what I said last Sunday. Anybody with a little political understanding and a knowledge of realpolitik could have predicted that the last thing Karunanidhi wanted was to go through with the threat of resignation of his DMK for very good reasons.
If his bull in a china shop politics was going to fell the Manmohan Singh administration from the seats of power in New Delhi, then Karunanidhi himself would be in for a rude shock.
Crashing down
If the Congress government was brought down in New Delhi, the Congress Party would surely have pulled the plug on Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu bringing his own administration crashing down and well ahead of its time.
Karunanidhi and his advisers would surely have known that the Congress party would retaliate politically in what seemed an obvious tit-for-tat move. Undermining the DMK boss in his own backyard would have been something he could not have stomached, for he was also been literally hit in the stomach.
Stunt
If all that was known as possible, even probable, political reactions in case Karunanidhi carried out his threat and these options would have been carefully weighed, the only conclusion is that the DMK man was pulling a big stunt. Karunanidhi had as much an intention of resigning as Osama bin Laden has of becoming president of the United States.
While some of our chaps were going into fits of apoplexy because of the political tom toms that were beating in Tamil Nadu, those more accustomed to the antics of politicians, especially politicos that are full of bluster ( and we in Sri Lanka do have a few in the cabinet who are full of froth and no beer) would have surveyed the developing scenes on either side of the Palk Strait with amusement rather than trepidation.
Survival
As the deadline for the resignations approached the fissures in the Tamil Nadu political landscape began to surface. What first seemed like a monolithic stand in support of the Sri Lanka Tamils caught up in the Wanni began to show signs of cracking up and little by little the novelty of a united stand began to wear off as political survival began to take precedence over a sudden show of concern.
That might work well in some B grade movie but it hardly pays in long term politics.
So both the central government and the Tamil Nadu chief minister had to put on a show that would seem like a cricket test match washed off by rain. Both sides come out of it hoping that their reputations are intact.
Save face
But anybody who knows something about politics and the way it is played out in our part of the world External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukerjee's visit to Chennai to meet Karunanidhi was as much, if not more, to save Karunanidhi's face as to cool tempers and show that the central government is doing something to prevail on Sri Lanka to take note of the Tamil civilians caught up in Tiger territory.
This time round the Indian Government was not going to drop Masoor parippu over the Jaffna peninsula. Rather they would send 800 tons of food by conventional routes and means to be distributed to the civilians in the conflict zones.
Actor
Poor Karunanidhi. He is looking even more like a third grade actor than he has been all these years.
There were all those bets been given and taken on Wednesday evening when I dropped into Paradise Club, our favourite watering hole, as some of us are wont to do most evenings.
The chief minister of Tamil Nadu was the butt end of most bets and even more jokes. What would the man do with his daughter Kanimozhi's letter of resignation effective from October 29? There are no reports of her having given up her seat and gone home to look after papa.
Dowry
No sir, so what will the father do with the letter? Some at Paradise Club thought he might give it to her husband as part of her dowry. Others thought he might stick it in the family album just to show the public that there were other cheap actors in the family.
Remember that great hand-in-hand chain of humans and humanoids that was planned as a gesture to show how much Tamil Nadu cared for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, the one that was washed out by rain the first time.
Rainy day
Well when they finally linked hands one rainy day, some reports said that it stretched 60 kilometers. Now how many people would be needed to form a human chain 60 kilometers long? The whole of Tamil Nadu, minus Jayalalitha and her political friends and enemies? Well how many would that be?
Pity no enterprising DMK-supporting journalists did not walk the distance with calculator in hand totting up the rain-soaked numbers on the 60 kilometer route!
One political farce is over. All that we need now is a farce unto death.
